The Becker School District is committed to providing the instruction and intervention necessary to the development of high levels of competence in literacy for all students. It is critical for our students to graduate with the skills necessary for successful participation in post-secondary education in order to fully develop their competency as citizens ready to thrive in a multi-cultural global community.
The reading department is here to support families, students, and educators. As a team of trained specialists, we are committed to promoting literacy at all levels. We also want to continue to nurture relationships to maximize learning and promote a feeling of felt safety, and promote positive self-talk centered on success for our team, colleagues, and families.
In Kindergarten to Third Grade literacy competency is defined as:
1) The ability to successfully read grade level literature and informational texts with appropriate and growing skills in comprehension and analysis.
2) The ability to produce grade level narrative and expository writing.
This local literacy plan describes the specific actions the Becker School District is committed to taking in order to meet the requirements set forth under MN Statute 122A.05 and ensure all students are reading well by third grade. This statue requires districts to post a local literacy plan to the District website and submit proficiency to the Commissioner of Education on an annual basis.
Overarching Goal: All students will read at grade-level by Grade 3 as measured by the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment in Reading.
